A lot can be said about how the country has coped with the effects of Typhoon Yolanda over the last month. While criticisms have certainly come into play when it comes to management of resources and relief goods, one thing remains constant—the way Filipinos have been described to weather the storm: with a smile, with a determined will, and with hope for tomorrow.
As we end the year, survey the innovative ways in which Pinoys have pooled together to help out, and use these as inspiration to keep you in tune with the rest of the country as 2014 approaches.
Cook Out to Help Out
It’s no surprise that Filipinos have come to one of their favorite activities—cooking and eating to help support the cause. For three days, mall goers and food lovers all came together at Power Plant Mall to indulge in a comfort food fave—burers and fries, in order to raise money to help victims. Everyone from top celebs to designers to chef heavyweights came to serve every foodie that came to support the event. Free ice cream was handed out and everyone came to celebrate the Pinoy’s love for food and for fellow countrymen.
Katpinunan #baHAIYANihan
Bloggers, artists, fashion savvy folk and even performers came together up north to create a unique sale that benefitted the kids of Malapascua, enabling them to rebild their school. Hip clothes from top retail brands were sold at a maximum of P300, and shoes, accessories, signed paraphernalia came in from celebrities including Bianca Gonzalez, Doug Kramer, Justin Chua, Rosanna Aranaz and Alyssa Lapid. With an added performance by SPIT everyone was in high spirits as the youth united to help out.
#UNSELFIE
With the proliferation of selfie-focused apps and sites like Instagram and Facebook, today’s generation of millennials have become known as a self-centered bunch. The #unselfie campaign, launched by David Guerrero (creative chairman of BBDO Guerrero), aimed to spread the word on ways to donate to the cause. An alternative to posting the generic selfie, an #unselfie allowed people to step out of their own egos and selves for a moment to help out.
