Warm Greetings!

Filipinos the world over are known for their hospitality and warm smiles. Those visiting their Pinoy relatives abroad are often greeted with grandiose meals and comfortable, spruced up surroundings; while balikbayans coming home after a long time away are welcomed with the comforts of home that have long been missed. Tourists often cite how special they feel whenever they make their way to the Philippines, and are always in awe of the cheerful, sunny disposition that permeates throughout the streets, regardless of whatever state the country is in.

Hospitality has become such a unique trademark of our culture because of the natural openness of Filipinos to other people. Even the simple gesture of greeting one another, whether in the household, office or at a relative’s house, shows the welcoming nature of Filipinos—a value that can certainly be appreciated here and across the shores.

Kumusta?
“How are you?” is a common form of greeting among Pinoys. Going beyond just a simple “hello” or “good morning,” saying “Kumusta ka?” allows you to dig deeper and sincerely express your interest in someone else’s well being. The next time you venture into asking a person how they are, do it earnestly and with intent and allow yourself to be one with a friend, an acquaintance or even a stranger through a simple greeting.

Kain Tayo!
It’s practically customary for Filipinos to greet anyone who walks in on a merienda home or a meal at a restaurant by inviting them to join in on the food. Sharing whatever is on the table is just one of the ways in which Pinoys show their hospitality. Bonding over a shared meal, no matter how grand or simple, is part and parcel of everyday life!

Mabuhay!
Though not typically uttered among family, friends or even coworkers, “Mabuhay!” is the general greeting offered to tourists, foreigners, and those coming in to the Philippines for the first time. Translated, it means “Live!” and is a way of expressing your desire for others to live well and celebrate life.
