Find the Right Gown for your Body Type

In a perfect world, we could snip that Oscar red carpet gown off our favorite celebrity, snap our fingers so it comes to life, and step into it without a hitch. Everything would drape perfectly, cinch everything that needs to be cinched, and accentuate all your best parts. Unfortunately, we regular folk don’t have the budget for a made-to-order designer dress, nor the perfect body to match exactly what we’ve got in mind.

In other cases, we can’t even figure out what we want, what with the sensory overload all these magazines, wedding forums, and Pinterest boards have to offer.

Whatever stage you’re at when it comes to finding or creating your perfect gown, it helps to first work with your own body type in order to narrow down the choices and see which silhouettes work for you.

Take these pointers along when scouring the racks or choosing a designer or dressmaker, and embrace all the possibilities that working with your own body—regardless of shape or size—can bring.

Petite.
Ball gowns will swallow your tiny frame. Instead of going for princess-type poufs, think of slinkier silhouettes that can extend your height to look longer and leaner. Sticking to natural waists or even slight empire waistlines won’t cut off your torso and instead create more length.

Curvy.
Emphasize your curves while staying classy by pulling the eye and the focus to a pretty, cinched waist. Hourglass and A-line silhouettes will help define your figure and lighter fabrics that don’t drag you down will help keep everything light, airy, and easy on the eyes.

Larger Bust.
A full skirt will balance out a heavier top, while a ball gown skirt can create more symmetry to your figure. Utilize a high neckline or elegant lace to help keep things under cover while adding a delicate, light aesthetic to your overall look.

Lean and Long.
Add femininity to your figure with silhouettes that create curves for you. Ruching and drapes can help create a flowy quality, and slimming shapes that have detailing at the waist can help whittle your torso to create lovely lines.

Hourglass.
Enhance your curves and hide any flaws that make you self-conscious with a gown that showcases your femininity. Mermaid silhouettes can build on the womanly figure you’ve got, while ball gown skirts can hide extra width in the hips.
