Top 5 Debut Themes

If you’re strapped for ideas when it comes to planning out your 18th birthday party, it helps to narrow down the many, almost infinite, choices that are available to you. Scouring through magazine pages, looking to your favorite TV shows for inspiration, and even becoming checking out stylistically appealing films and fashion trends can provide you with a wealth of ideas that can sometimes be downright confusing.

Whatever direction you’re thinking about taking for your party, know that your party needs to embody your own style, your personality and your ideas. “Because a debut is a once-in-a-lifetime milestone; think of it as your very own prom! Seeing your friends and family all dressed up, having fun, and celebrating YOU is such an amazing feeling you wouldn't want to miss out on,” says Marla Miniano, editor-in-chief of Candy magazine.

Here are a few ideas that can help you get the ball rolling!

Color-centric.
Starting with your favorite color can help you streamline your decorations, your dress, your menu, and even the giveaways you’re thinking of providing for your guests. An all-white theme, for example, is perfect for a light, ethereal personality; while someone who’s very feminine and girly can always stick to a pink palette for all things sugar and spice.

Food-centric.
If you’ve always been a foodie at heart, you can kick off your party planning with a theme inspired by your menu. Macaron lovers can run with a French patisserie-inspired theme in pretty pastel colors; while those with a constant cupcake craving can certainly go the DIY route, baking the treats themselves and going for a more Pinterest / blackboard and chalk-inspired theme.

Place-centric.
If you’ve always dreamed of traveling the beaches of Hawaii, a luau would be a wonderful theme to encapsulate your sun, sand and surf dreams. A luau can spin off into everything from leis for the guests and a barbecue for the food—the possibilities are endless. If you’re still high on the World Cup fever and love everything Brazil, doing a bright yellow and green palette, coupled with your very own churascarria and a flip-flops only dress code would be super chic.

Music-centric.
If you never go anywhere without your mp3s and earphones, consider picking your favorite artist and using that as a jumping off point for your party. Taylor Swift fans can turn their 18th birthday parties into a fairytale celebration, while EDM fans can create their own version of Tomorrowland complete with music to pump fists to and glow in the dark stars to light up the night.

Décor-centric.
Those who have always loved all things visual can whip up the perfect setting for an 18th birthday party and turn it into a fun, craft-filled affair. Think calligraphy, handmade stamps, and origami ornaments—even setting up tables covered up in kraft paper that guests can scribble and doodle on. Just think of all the creative outlets a big party can offer—invitations, streamers, party flags, and everything in between!
